2) I could improve on shaping out the jaw line of the second painting without the picture in the bag ground.

Thank you for posting both images. You did an excellent job using the pen tool to select the different shapes that needed painting. I like the contrast between the fuchsia and yellow as well as between the smooth and textural shapes.
